“Night lingered in the nooks and crannies of the family farmhouse as Lodoïs slipped out, shoes in hand, bindle over one shoulder (…) Soft scarves of mist curled about the pines and cypresses, the earth nodding off beneath a featureless grey sky. And yet they were there. The boy needed no stars in the heavens above to feel them, sense their presence, almost hear them. Wolves, prowling by the village gates, lurking under the ramparts.”

Every year, on New Year’s Eve, wolves appear at the gates of the village where Lodoïs lives and demande their due: a gray-eyed child. Such is the price of peace, and the villagers have paid it for so long that even the eldest among them have lost count. Unbeknownst to his loved ones, to ward off what all call “the curse,” Lodoïs, a young blue-eyed boy, decides to confront the wolf pack. Pursued by the wolves, he sets off on a headlong journey deep into the enchanted wood, which holds the key to many a mystery.

A headlong chase, breathless and poetic, sweeping readers into the depths of a snowy forest
A novel with tinges of timeless tales, suffused with magic and humanity
As with other novels in the same imprint, imbued with a strong sense of environmental responsibility. This confrontation between a child and a pack of wild wolves reveals a highly ecological dimension.
