1993, Beirut. Kafala, a form of guardianship exercised by employers over their domestic workers from foreign countries, is a widespread practice in Lebanon. So when Nada’s grandmother acquires her new little maid, Ife, an Ethiopian girl, the young girl sees nothing wrong with it. Admittedly, her grandmother goes a little too far by demanding, among other things, to watch the maid wash herself, but for Nada, these are just the whims of an old woman with backward ideas. However, thanks to her brother, Nada realizes that the treatment imposed on Ife and all the other “little maids” is nothing less than slavery and that, even though she is more modern than her grandmother, this does not prevent her from having to question herself as well.
