1924, Paris-Douarnenez.
Carol and her sister Suzanne live in Paris, where, while the elder sister attends classes at the Beaux-Arts, the younger sister, Suzanne, occupies her boredom by reading fashion magazines and smoking opium. During a stay in Douarnenez, Carol meets Yarig, a penn sardin, the name given to female workers in sardine factories, and convinces her mother to hire her as a maid. However, it is Yarig’s sister Angèle who arrives in Paris a few weeks later. The young Breton woman struggles to find her feet in this new world where everyone looks down on her and the long-awaited salary is slow in coming.
While in Douarnenez, Yarig forgets her disappointment at not having left thanks to the strikes that are beginning to spring up in the factories, in Paris, Carol, born intersex, is plagued by doubts about her identity. She begins to go out under the identity of Ivan, a young journalist, but is unmasked by her stepfather, who kicks her out. She flees to Douarnenez with Angèle, where they meet up with Yarig and the other strikers, before being joined by Suzanne and her mother. The women witness the end of the strike and the victory of the penn sardin. This moment marks a new beginning for Carol, who, as she crosses the ocean on a transatlantic liner, chooses to embrace her new gender, and for Suzanne, who decides to take control of her life, while Angèle and Yarig return to their jobs at the factory with their heads held high.
