Like every summer, Élo and her parents spend their vacations by the sea in Citéplage. But this year, where the sea should be, there is only sand and rocks. For months, the sea has been receding, sucked away endlessly and for no known reason, creating a current that cannot be resisted by swimming or boating.
Élo is not afraid of the ebb tide and this untameable sea, unlike her mother, a former swimming champion, who hides in their apartment, clinging to her radio. Élo tries to act as if nothing has changed, but the presence of Hugo, who is visiting the seaside for the first time and dreams of becoming a sailing captain, shakes her certainties. Their friendship in this deserted seaside town where turtles wash up in despair, her mother’s withdrawal, and her father’s ambiguous attitude push Élo to become independent and free herself from her mother’s expectations.
Will La Bonde, the solution found by the government to end the ebb tide, allow everything to return to the way it was before: the sea, Hugo’s dreams, and Élo’s mother?
