A king and queen had just had a baby boy so small that they did not want to keep him. They placed him in a golden thimble and put it in the river. The thimble washed up near a cave inhabited by two giants. They took the child in and gave him their strength so that he would grow, their words so that he would no longer be afraid, and their love so that he would be happy.
Years later, the king and queen, caught in a storm, took shelter with the giants and recognized their son by the golden thimble he wore around his neck. As he had grown handsome and strong, and they had no heir, they begged him to join them at court.
The young man chose to give back to each what they had given him: to the giants, his love; to the king and queen, their golden die. The king and queen had no heir. The young man did not become a prince. He lived a long life, at peace with himself in both joy and sorrow.
