On her way back from school, Anizou finds a book accidentally dropped by a troll. As she leafs through it, naming the animals she finds on every page, those very same creatures emerge from the woods to fill the snowy landscape around her. In so doing, she reenchants the forest, which comes to seem less silent and empty than it first appeared.

Through this simple, unlikely, and fantastical event, Jennifer Dalrymple delicately evokes our severed ties with nature, which we are utterly a part of, but from which we have distanced ourselves. All it takes to renew our bonds is paying even just a little attention to our non-human neighbors: getting to know them takes knowing to how to see and hear.

Jennifer Dalrymple
Born last century in the land of giant sequoias, Jennifer Dalrymple grew up in France. Today she lives in a small house in the woods. Owls and foxes are her friends and neighbors. Every day she is grateful to be there, standing on the belly of the Earth. There’s so much to see, so much to tell about worlds both real and dreamed that she has made doing so her profession.

And so, over time, she has published over one hundred and fifty stories. If life gives her the chance, she’ll write a thousand more.
Protecting the environment, nature, and animals are a few of her recurrent themes. Jennifer Dalrymple gives lectures on environmentalism at her website: www.jenniferdalrymple.net
