Lolie loves her vacations at Grandpa’s house. When they end, Mom and Dad have a surprise for her: Barbalou, a Sphynx cat. Lolie is horrified; Barbalou has no fur, is “wrinkly,” and doesn’t look anything like a “real cat” like the ones she knows. She refuses to go near him despite her parents’ efforts. However, as she watches Barbalou cuddle, Lolie suddenly realizes that his “wrinkly” appearance strangely reminds her of her dear Grandpa. This unexpected connection transforms her vision. When Grandpa visits them, Lolie confides in him that Barbalou is now like a part of him by their side. Lolie learns to love Barbalou madly, realizing that connection and affection do not depend on appearances.
