The caribbean tale was born and developed from the 16th century in colonial houses. Once night fell, the master, or “béké” (white), allowed his slaves to gather together to listen to the one who would tell them stories: the storyteller. These tales, whose roots came from different African countries, had, as everywhere, the main function of distracting and entertaining. But by transmitting forbidden words and messages, they also had a function of resistance. Some heroes and recurring characters represented the slaves themselves, or the master. The stories collected here are classified into two main categories: animal tales and tales of humans and supernatural creatures.
