1914. Lille is under German bombardment. Defying their fears, sixteen-year-old Adèle and her older sister enlist as nurses. But Adèle wants to do more for her country. Albert, her stretcher-bearer friend, puts her in touch with a spy network and introduces her to Mme de B., who entrusts her with documents to pass on to the Free French Forces. The young woman manages to smuggle her first documents into the free zone, hidden in the hem of her skirt, and meets Pierre, a disturbing character who seems to be playing a double game.
Adèle’s daily life becomes increasingly dangerous and, on her return from one of her nighttime escapades, she is arrested on Pierre’s orders. The young woman thinks she is lost, but Pierre reveals that, although he is personally benefiting from the war, he is nonetheless on the same side as her and fighting for the same cause.
Adèle is smuggled out to England and realizes that the documents confiscated from her during her arrest would have prevented the Germans from using mustard gas in the trenches.
Adèle vows to return to France to fight alongside Albert.
