Scheggia, the woodworm, tells his children the story of Mafialda, which took place before they were born. Years earlier, a spider (or rather, a female spider) named Mafialda had arrived in the barn where they lived. At first, she presented herself as a great benefactor of the insect community, but then slowly took over and gained power over everyone. Until some insects, including Scheggia, Brazil, Bombo, and Lenta, rebelled and finally managed to drive her away.
