Medea, Birth of a Witch

A feminist rewriting of childhood and the myth of Medea.

Medea grew up surrounded by stories about her family, but her golden childhood came to an end when an oracle predicted that her sister’s husband would destroy the kingdom. The next day, Medea witnesses the murder of Phryxos by her brother and uncle, but when she reveals this to her father, he chooses to send her to the island of her aunt Circe, who is rumored to be mad. After a difficult first few months, trust develops between Medea and Circe. Her aunt teaches her magic and tells her the story of their family from a different perspective. Medea realizes that women have always been deprived of their freedom. When her father calls her back, the young woman decides to no longer let others dictate her behavior and supports Jason, a stranger who has come to claim the Golden Fleece, the treasure of Colchis.
