On the Chemin des Dames, Vincent Morlas, Joseph Dartigue, Sergeant Hurel, Captain Lamy, and all the soldiers of the 18th Regiment are preparing to launch their final offensive before finally being able to enjoy some leave. And their plan, as crazy as it may seem, will lead them to success.
As they savor the success of their action on the terrace of the inn, under the May sun, the soldiers hear about the first regiments that have refused to fight. While this idea takes root in the minds of Morlas and Dartigue, the two men learn that their leave has been canceled and that they must lead a new attack that very evening. Outraged, they refuse to follow this order and lead other men to follow them.
Pieces of red cloth appear at the ends of their rifles, and the mutiny begins. But the momentum of the evening and night gives way to fear of reprisals, and by the next morning, only a handful of men refuse to march.
Morlas and Dartigue are arrested and, after a hasty trial, sentenced to death.
