Two authors, esteemed specialists in Vietnam, raised from childhood on the poetry of Vietnamese folktales: Maurice Coyaud, born in Hanoi, who learned them from his nannies, and Lê Thi Xuyên, born in Nouméa, who heard them from his family, his parents and older siblings, who passed down the rich imaginarium of an entire people and their traditions.

And so it was that on great occasions like weddings, sticky rice cakes like banh chung were made as offerings to Heaven and Earth. Never did such celebration pass without mention of the legend of Lang Lien, youngest of the king’s sons, who became his father’s heir by preparing these tasty delicacies, which often played a pivotal role in the royal succession.

The tales here are organized by theme: Heaven, Earth, and People, Animals, Plants, Objects, Holidays.
