In the forests of the Andes, 11-year-old Majina, a member of the Embera tribe, has her prey stolen by a golden-eyed jaguar, the embodiment of the spirit of the forest. The animal leads the girl to a remote meadow where she discovers a vein of gold at the foot of a fallen tree. Aware of the consequences this discovery could have on the life of her tribe, Majina hides her find. To improve her family’s daily life, she nevertheless sells a few nuggets to Father Gregorio, the priest of the neighboring village. He shows them to El Jefe, the leader of the local guerrilla group, setting off a spiral of greed and violence. El Jefe and his men take the Embera tribe and Majina hostage to force her to reveal the location of the gold vein. Thanks to Majina’s grandfather and with the help of the golden-eyed jaguar, the Emberas and Majina manage to free themselves. During a ceremony within her tribe, the young girl promises not to reveal the location of the vein to anyone and to try to forget it herself so that it can no longer harm them.
