1667, in the Cévennes.
At sixteen, the girl known as “The Wolf” because of the animal skin she wears lives alone in the forest. Although she does not speak, she remains in contact with the other “Exiles,” men who, like her, have fled their villages and their lives to take refuge in the woods, far from the State and its agents. However, while in the nearby valley, residents, subjected to increasingly heavy taxes and the tyranny of soldiers, are also joining the forest, the State begins logging operations. The existence of a free and wild forest and the Exiles’ way of life are in danger, but they are determined to fight to defend their beliefs. However, they do not resist the professional troops for long. La Louve is captured and taken to Dr. Legendre, who wants to “cure” this “savage” and turn her into a model citizen. Hurt by the doctor’s intrusive examinations, La Louve finds refuge in her childhood memories. Once she regains her strength, she attacks Dr. Legendre, but is arrested, tried, and sentenced to death. Jeandou manages to free her. With him, she returns to the forest and goes deeper than she has ever gone before, hoping that this time no one will find her.
