Charles, the son of a humble royal gardener, sees his fate turned upside down from the moment he is born. Through a series of circumstances and the king’s jealousy, he is abandoned at sea in a glass cradle, then taken in and raised by a merchant from Bordeaux. As a young man, he is brought back to the king’s court, where the king once again attempts to get rid of him by sending him to deliver a sealed letter to the queen—a letter ordering his death. Thanks to the kindness of three strangers, the letter is replaced, and Charles is welcomed with honor.

His bravery in the army earns him everyone’s gratitude and the princess’s love, but the king sets an impossible condition for their union: to bring back three hairs from the Devil’s golden beard. Charles accepts the challenge, faces a thousand dangers, and, with the help of the Devil’s mother, manages to accomplish the feat. Upon his return, the truth about his origins comes to light, the king dies of rage, and Charles marries the princess in a sumptuous wedding. This tale blends adventure, magic, cunning, and justice to create a thrilling story in which courage and luck triumph over adversity.
