When young Louise, passing through his village, tells him that she lives in a palace equipped with all modern amenities, including a swimming pool, Émile, the son of farmers who grew up in a large family, takes her for a liar. Intrigued, he sets out to find her, crossing paths with proletarians mistreated by nascent capitalism and revolutionaries. When he arrives in Guise, Émile discovers that Louise was not lying: the familistère that Mr. Godin built for his workers does indeed exist. Émile trains and works there in decent conditions until the war puts an end to this social utopia.
