A story turned into a poem that celebrates a mother’s unusual passion and the happiness she brings to her home.

My mom is a bricklayer. She builds houses. She stirs cement like béchamel sauce. She knows how to build walls that withstand the wind, but that freedom breaks. She also talks to the stones for hours and apologizes for breaking their hearts. And then in the evening, when she comes home, her face covered in dust, my dad has to wipe her face to kiss her. In our house without straight walls, the floors creak, live to the rhythm of the seasons, and the starry sky reaches out to us.
