It starts out as a beautiful story. At a party with friends, fifteen-year-old Diane meets Malo, who is two years older than she is. He’s handsome, muscular, has a perfect smile, and most of all, Diane melts at the sight of his ocean-blue eyes. She can’t believe a boy like him is interested in her. Malo thinks Diane is gorgeous, and he never stops telling her so. Like her friends, he supports her when she auditions for The Voice. He helps her cope with the distance from her sister, who has gone to study in Quebec, and her parents’ divorce. But as the months go by, Diane sees Malo’s ocean-blue eyes darken more and more often. When he’s upset, when he’s offended, when Diane doesn’t do exactly what he wants the way he wants it—including during sex. The abuse starts out verbal and psychological, then turns physical. Her friends and family feel helpless. Diane is under his control; she does everything she can to keep Malo’s eyes from turning into a storm. Until the violence goes too far.
